Description
A hundred years ago, Heike Kamerlingh Onnes discovered superconductivity, the extraordinary but important phenomenon which is applied in MRI scanners and particle accelerators. One of the most important items in the exhibition is the helium liquefier, the cooling apparatus which Kamerlingh Onnes used in 1908 to become the first person to turn helium into a liquid. Also special is a spool of lead wire from 1912, the very first superconductor. Kamerlingh Onnes' original notebook in which he wrote his observations on 8th April 1911 is also exhibited.
